Welcome

Hello. My name is Ryan. This is my web page. It's not really about anything. I put here all the things I have that I think the world should see. If you want to know more, you can read the about page. You'll probably want to check out the design gallery. And if you're really adventurous I think my audio files are worth a listen.

I appreciate well written software

By "well written software" I mean "software that doesn't use the registry." Of course.

I just purchased myself a fancy new computer for all the fancy new video games (specs available on request) which has a new hard drive. When getting all my data back and everything up and running there is nothing like getting everything 100% like it used to be with little or no effort.

My four most-used applications, Pidgin, Firefox, Thunderbird, and foobar2000 all use the Application Data folder (now AppData/Roaming in Vista) to store all of their data, settings, and temp files. Which makes it ridiculously easy to transfer all the data over. I just have to copy and paste and open up the program and everything is exactly how it was.

It's not so for some programs though. Photoshop is the biggest offender. I always have to completely reconfigure Photoshop which can be a pain.

I really don't understand why anyone would use the registry for everything. Maybe the API to interact with it is easier to use. But manipulating text files in a folder is pretty damn easy too. I don't think it's a speed thing because all of these programs are very quick, with the exception of Firefox which can easily get a little large with extensions and whatnot.

I imagine all of these stuff would have gotten copied over if I had used, say, the file transfer program that comes with Windows. Would the library have come with Windows Media Player? That's a good question.

Anyway, my new computer is fast and has all my stuff on it. That's just good stuff.
